no himal, but it did not matter - posted on 8 september 2014

saturday (6th september) morning started with cloud cover over Kathmandu valley, after a weeklong golden sunrays piercing the morning skies... oooops i thought...we were going up to kot with my communication colleagues for a potluck lunch.  but by 9 the sun was shining through.  heard mountains could be seen from patan side in the morning.. but by the time baba and i reached kot, they were covered by clouds.

but it didn't matter .. for the view from kot is more fascinating these still monsoonish days as one gets to watch the play of sun and clouds over the verdant valley.. yes, still a lot of fields in the outskirts!

john was there, as was binoy. robin came with lisa and son rohan, sharmina was there with hubby ricky, and sanju with daughter samata. manju could not make it, neither could priya and Aaaya. lots and lots of laughs, good food, and of course gazing into the valley below...

skies cleared of dust by the monsoon rains, is bright blue, and the valley floor  green with paddy.  lots of 'tunnel' farming plastic greenhouses growing tomatoes this year... and the high-rise apartment buildings that have been completed and painted, now quite prominent in the Kathmandu cityscape.
john tried to spot the zoo, and therefore his house next to it...

we stayed in the terrace till lunchtime
... enjoying the view.... each others' company.... drinking...
 .. or snacking...
 ... or just lazing...
 binoy ventures barefoot for lunch
rohan the 'anterminator' is all set to keep kot cottage free of ants with his 'home-rohan-made' super safe bug repellent (or is it bug killer?)
he explains to john about the specialty of his special concoction
... lunchtime...

.. post lunch... john has everyone in fits talking about family traditions...
.. a game of uno.. (rohan has already won and is out of the scene!)

the oldest and the youngest.. the winner rohan with baba the loser!
 poster boy rohan
.. who is commissioning john with the task of keeping his potions safe...

these few photographs taken by rohan from my camera...

 rohan the sugary hyperactive kid!
.. and the would be Bollywood hero!
sharmina and ricky left early.. and then the next to leave were sanju, samata and john.  but before the latter left we posed for a group photo
going up to the terrace i saw this cloudburst over maharajgunj area...
closer look at the 'bhadauray ' (month of bhadau)phenomenon
 .. and even closer...
.. some clouds to the south west trying to look menacing
.. and a patch of bright coloured ones to the east, framed between two lapsi trees...
so, no himal sighting,  but a fun outing at kot nevertheless!

in virginia waters again... posted on 8 december 2013

the blue skies beckoned, and once more kripa and i were back in virginia waters to enjoy the fresh air, the trees the water, the birds.. nature...  the clouds came on once again.. but then almost like magic the sun shone low in the horizon casting a golden hue to everything  the sunbeams alighted upon....

  skeletal trees
the clouds turn the environment grey
 reflections
sky is getting a golden tint and the waters reflect it back
 swan's doing a real bottoms up !
 tranquil waters

totem pole (a year younger than me!)brought from british columbia and carved by the kwakiutls of a log of a 600 year old western red cedar tree...
most of the trees that still have leaves left have now turned brown
the 100-ft tall totem from afar.. the sun begins to shine through in bits...
from afar i thought this was a flowering tree...
closer .. realised they were white berries! लटरम्मै!!
further along there were red berries
these ones with a golden tint in the evening sun
serenity...
skeletal branches
hadn't realised pine trees (don't know which ones) also lose their needles in winter...
:)
suddenly one tree with leaves still on seems to come aflame.. the sun was shining through!
 branches turn golden...
.. the atmosphere seems magical...
 light and shade...
the golden hued view
sublime
.. like off some fairy tale movie...
looking west
sun plays hide and seek with trees

it enhances the wobbly warts on this tree
... as he goes lower into the horizon...
 'neath the giant redwood trees
.. this pup tries to bark away the swans...
.. the sun's now gone... and the atmosphere once more turns grey
