okay folks, have decides to give my narrator, the blogger, a rest today, and am going to lay it out.. straight from the crow's beak.... actually i didn't think i'd be back so early with another blog.. thought it would be good to post once the hatchlings came forth... but today here were a couple of incidents that i needed to tell you about... and the blogger also took a couple of videos which should be interesting for you to watch...
first of all let me show you how the nest has grown.. this was were we left off last.. remember?
.. and just as a special treat, a close up look too... just to also show you how hard we've been working...
once the mainframe, or superstructure was ready it was time to work on the interior, to make the insides soft and cushiony for the safety of the eggs, and then the young ones. (by the way, have you noticed that the flowers in the tree are now in bloom? they attract a zillion bees and insects...)
finishing the interior needs a special technique. if we used hard and heavy stuff like the aluminium and other wires for the mainframe, for the inside, we use soft stuff.. like twine, yarn, thread, shredded plastic rope... and of course, the older and 'used' the material the better for the nestlings later.... even amiritso kucho bits make excellent inner lining for the nest.. but we do have to risk being shooed away nastily by humans who catch us pecking away and 'destorying' their kuchos (brooms)
here you can see me with a bit of thread i found on a ledge of a nearby home... waiting for the right moment to fly to the nest...
.. once there, i place it carefully on the inside...
.. and then fix it with my beak...
the cup portion of the nest, where my mate will lay her eggs, has to be rounded up.. and we do it by doing the 'butt jiggle'... just watch my piyaari do it.... at the end of the video clip below you will see me a bit dazed and frazzled.. it was just a very long day.. when i had to keep on flying up and down and up and down bringing these building materials...
and then fast forward to today. was a strange day indeed... from the morning itself there were these bunch of other gangster crows that wanted to come and capture our nest... i'd heard about this from the oldies.. but never expected to experience it... maybe it was because we'd built in a prime location at the edge of the branches? we had to call in our family members to our rescue .. and as for my mate and myself, we took turns spreading our wings over the nest so that the others couldn't come and lay claim on it... phew!
anyway..i lost many feathers during the day.. take a look at these two videos .. one taken from the blogger's dining room, and the other taken from below our tree of the attempted 'nest grab' by other loud crows...
phew again! that was hard... i really prayed hard that this would not last through the whole day...
.. and then someone seems to have heard our prayers.. for in the afternoon there was a sudden burst of wind and rain and made everyone fly helter skelter. i was a bit worried about our nest .. as the young branches that we have built the nest on swayed back and forth... but all was safe and okay, we did not lose a single twig...
... the rain drenched us all...
.. even my neighbour from a neighbouring tree... who took time to preen himself in the shower...
... so that's it for today.. will keep you all posted on further developments.. waiting for the 'stork' to bring nice bundles to us ( as you humans tend to say.. but why storks? for heaven's sake!)
