in bergen - posted on 28 august 2010

these are images from bergen, where we were last week. a pretty little place in the western seaboard of norway.. where the mountains and sea meet. we met up with priya and her friends who are attending university of bergen for a semester, and went around the city. the day we went to the fjords has been covered by my previous blog.

these pictures from the air as our plane was descending towards bergen airport

a visit the students' centre at the university with its suspended auditorium...

we roamed the city, this beautiful patch in the city centre

we were extrememly lucky with the weather. we'd read that it rained 260 days in a year in bergen.. but luckily we caught the other 100 days of it!!!
this is the seamen's monument..

and a closeup of one of the faces...

nice, huh?

the sea is definitely nearby!

at the fishmarket...

then while priya went 'home' to collect her stuff, kripa, baba and myself took the funicular upto floyen hill to get a bird's eye view of the city...

the view was great indeed!

the little lake and the city centre...

the mossy forest atop floyen was very pretty and romantic indeed.. as captured by kripa!

we lingered up until dusk set in.. the golden rays reflecting on the fjords and the sea way beyond...

our hotel was just in front of this green gabled church

... baba thought the scene reminded him of the little towns we saw in the miniature wonderland in hamburg!

this water sculpture fascinated us.. each face representing different aspect of water movement.. the ripples, the swirls...

.. in detail...

.. the third day was bright and sunny...

near the fishmarket looking towards the harbour, the bryggen (quay), now a unesco heritage site...

...with its quaint wooden structures...

and alleys... filled with shops and offices... a weathervane...

and the leaning buildings of the bryggen...

.. and century old buildings

this seems to be bryggen's sorha khuttey pati

we even went to see the house where priya was living with her other 13 programme teammates

their house is located in a very pretty part of bergen...

we then checked out of the hotel... .. and went with mr. krishna babu shrestha to his home. krishnaji stays south of bergen and is pursuing a doctoral degree at the university and is a guardian and mentor of sorts for all the nepali students coming in...

.. krishnaji welcomes to his newly acquired home...

their backyard boasts of a natural rock garden!!
