tilottama ko serophero -- posted on 30 sugust 2010

two days after coming back from the looooong vacation i was in batauli (butwal) on the banks of the tilottama (tinau)river. it had been raining incessantly for three days.. and tilottama was in spate...wild and angry. these are mainly images of the river from various angles

to go to butwal i had to take a plane to bhairawa. august 24th was not the best day to fly. there had been heavy downpour since early hours.. and the agni air dornier had crashed in makwanpur that morning. my flight was in the evening.. and fortunately the rains abated a bit and the mountains were visible... at least partially!

an agni air dornier has gone to bed early...

rivers in the valley were overflowing their banks...here is godabari khola in spate...

bagmati, rid of its black yuck with the rain water, winds its way out of the valley

looking south towards makwanpur hills... one gets a sense of comfort when the mountains are visible...

this sight is what is most disconcerting.. kept thinking that this is the view that must have greeted the crew and passengers of the ill fated plane that morning... total white-out...and the knowledge of the hilltops lurking below!

this is more comforting!!!

even more welcome is the sight of the ground.. the green paddy fields of nawalparasi, of course with the swollen rivers...

the first sirght of sunshine rays in three days... this from the aircraft as we were taxi-ing towards the bhairawa terminal.

the nearly complete sos children's village just across from the airport.. rain laden clouds to the north!

welcome to bhairawa... puddles and all!

next morning the clouds are still hugging the hills...

then a hint of fairer weather. .with the forests getting back their green colour...

the sora chhattis canal (so called because of the maujas they irrigate i was told)seems to be a readymade course for rapid-canoing!!

carving a living space over the canal!

puddles reflect the sun on the canal crossing...

tilottama from the eastern bank...

... looking southwards... the river tumbles over boulders...

seems ideal for brown water rafting!

.. to the northwest..

from the bridge on the nepalgunj highway... looking south...

... and north...

some shelter behind rocks for bathing...

the great landslide point on the sunauli highway visible below the clouds...

the sora chhattis community-managed canal... and the shanties alongside it. they all have ladders reaching down to the canal!
