monsoony kot - posted on 19 june 2011

kot offers a special treat during monsoons. the lush vegetation, the clouds romancing with the mountains, flooded fields ready for paddy transplantation, water droplets on leaves and flowers...

... these are pictures from yesterday evening and this morning...

coming down from bande gaun, farmers planting paddy in flooded fields
.. what a laborious task it is carving the terraces in these slopes to trap the monsoon rains. everywhere we looked in our drive up and down everyone seemed occupied with some aspect of ropain...
the drive up.. red road and green trees .. what a great combination...
... looking towards harisiddhi and beyond...
the flooded fields of harisiddhi reflecting a bit of the white clouds.. the fertile soil around this area have all been turned to bricks... but farmers still try to reap a good harvest of rice...
.. the rain had eased for the evening in the valley...
shivapuri summit nearly shrouded in a mantle of clouds
...the foothills of ganesh himal range peep from underneath the clouds...
... as do the foothills of himalchuli seen here behind the nagarjun summit...
... as the evening wore on.. the atmosphere became greyer
... and that's when the cicadas (jhyaunkiri)came full blast with their loud 'sirens'. when we were young they said, when you hear the jhyaunkiri , dasain is around the corner... well this seems to be a four-month-long corner...

it was nice to note that when night fell.. most of the valley twinkled below us.. unlike a month ago when only patches of the valley used to be lit up due to load-shedding! the dark patches are where there are no buildings.. just fields.. yes, fields!
...this morning we woke up to a drizzle...
...clouds hugged the kot hillside...
...closeup of an insect with droplets on its back...
a slug.. hardly seen in the valley core these days...
... a droplet at the end of a fern frond...
...raindrops on a puddle...
... and splotches where the water fell from the pipe...
... droplets on leaves...
... on flowers...
... and pine needles...
a reminder about akuri makuri ...
the view of bistachhaap valley on the other side...
... where the fields are ropain ready...
