in the past couple of weeks i had the opportunity twice to visit the southern village development committees, vdcs, of dadeldhura. i spent time in alital, jogbuda and shirsha vdcs. the images below were taken during these trips.. most of them in dadeldhura, some enroute. will let the images do most of the talking...
first the sunrise...
this was dawn from hotel pipal chautari in budar (doti) on the dhangadi-dadeldhura highway
this dawn view from shiradi village in alital
and the sunset views..a river reflects the sun's golden glow from the hills of kailali
the next couple of views are from sahajpur... just stupendous
these two pictures, taken on different dates, show the contrails of a jet flying above 30,000 feet heading towards delhi. many people in the village had different guesses to what this new phenomenon was. the children referred to the contrail as 'rocket' and some older women said, they'd heard someone say that it was something ominous, and that it would result in a rain of ashes, and total destruction of everything below
you will see a very short contrail in this image, a small whitish dash in the rightish centre
this was the amazing 'sandwich' sunset view of the annapurnas from the buddhaair beechcraft as we were flying towards nepalgunj. we were flying in between two layers of clouds and that's when the sun shone through.
following two shots taken from the beechcraft as we flew in from dhangadi.
this shot taken from the rear window of the aircraft is of the 'negelected' peaks of far west nepal.. equally beautiful as their eastern cousins, but not much talked about..
this is the crest of dhaulagiri.. a better shot as we were allowed to sneak into the cockpit for a couple of seconds!
have thrown in a view of congested patan
back to the dhangadi-dadeldhura highway.. this is the infamous bhasuki bheer.. where accidents have taken away many many lives over the years
looking westwards from the eastern border of alital. the furthest hills are in india.
the wooden phadkey over the rangun khola that separates jogbuda vdc from shirsha vdc. the camel humped mountain is in india and the fog at its base is over the mahakali river.
boulders swept down by the khahare khola in jogbuda during the dasain deluge this year
burning plastic waste in jogbuda...
... but even toxic smoke can create a beautiful photo-op!
shadow of a baby in the shawl cradle and the grandma waiting on the side
the girl on the bridge
class in the sun in shiradi. the sal log at the back had at least 150 rings in it!
crossing the soon khola.. a girl on her way to school in shiradi village
boys and girls scrambling over a steep rock after crossing the soon khola on their way to school
students in shirsha vdc
budi amai in shiradi
sallako dhuwan flavoured chiya in khani danda on the highway
woman shows her recently abandoned chhaupadi goth in shiradi. many of the men and older women said that the resason that menstruating women had to use such sheds were mainly to protect their 'milking' cattle, and for the welfare of the family members at large.
women taking a 'fresh' smoke in alital
woman in shirsha vdc returning with a huge load of grass. she's protecting her head by covering the headband namlo with grass too.
cleaning corn in shiradi
de-husking paddy for the next meal with a dhiki in shiradi
and okhal in shirsha.
little birdie on the river
the imposing tower over the bridge over the river karnali
ghariyals getting a suntan below the bridge over the river babai
them trees...
the chiuri tree in bloom. excellent chiuri honey sold by cooperatives in alital.
natural lightning arrestor on a house in shirsha
pretty flowers, weed or otherwise
mustard khet in bardiya...
...and in shiradi...
... and adorning the hair of a schoolgirl in shiradi
one of the oldest twin otters in service parked in kathmandu airport
and planes adorning the side of a truck in budar
elderly women returning from the vdc after collecting their old age bhatta in shirsha vdc
southbound sal logs from jogbuda in sahajpur
a "shaktiman" truck in jogbuda vdc.. according to a jogbuda lad, the all weather and all terrain vehicle used mainly by the indian army, was the only vehicle that could cross the bridgeless rangun khola! the shaktiman can... the shaktiman can!
nationalism in poetry in a grade three textbook in shiradi
remainder of the morning's chutney in the house of a resettled rautey family in shirsha vdc
personal hygiene care in shiradi
house in shirsha
temple in budar
statue in alital
handicapped shivaji in shirsha
the huge glacier-like landslide of sahajpur.. meandering and sweeping away the entire base of the mountain...
...including electricity tranmission lines in the path...
landslip near chisapani
paddy fields 'sanded and rocked' over by a flooded khahare khola during the dasain deluge in jogbuda vdc
landslip that destroyed a home in shiradi
destruction of a different sort.. remains of police post in alital vdc bombed by the maoists during the armed conflict.. lucklily, no lives lost, the locals said.
not so lucky in dudhejhadi in kailali recently though, where after half a dozen people lost their lives, several vehicles were also set alight...
and finally.. this image of the primary school (upto grade three) in shiradi lining up for the national anthem.. chimed like a poem with an upward lilt ending each line.. the smaller grades repreating every line of the ode to "maatra"-bhumi nepal after the older kids 'bhattyaoed' them!!!
